We are Maori, the indigenous people of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
We grew up in the country, not the city and because of that we love the outdoors.
In our culture, whanau (family) is important. We have marae, which would sort of translate as a Maori Community Centre, where the whole whanau gathers for events, lasting from a few hours to days. We have a meeting house, where we all sleep in and on the floor. We always take our shoes off before entering that, or our own homes.
We come from the top part of the north island and where we live, from our place it is only 5 ks from coast to coast.
The west coast is the Tasman sea and is rough. The east coast is the Pacific Ocean and is alot more calm.
At the top of the North Island, at Cape Reinga, the two seas meet.
The east coast has harbours and spectacular sunrises.
The first photo is taken on the Parengarenga Harbour, which is the most northern harbour of Aotearoa / New Zealand.
This sunrise photo is taken at the Houhora harbour, the next one down.
The west coast has spectacular sunsets.
No one lives out right on the West coast at home as it is wild out there. All of the trees grow pointing inland, due to the constant winds coming off the sea.
Most of the West Coast at home is the 90 mile beach. This photo is taken further north of there.

Hi I am from Australia and coming over for the snapper classic next year. As a local I would like to ask you a question. Am I able to drive from Ahipara to Waipapakauri Beach along the beach? We were looking at renting a house in Ahipara. Thanks Chris
