York Beach, Maine

York Beach, Maine

The beach on a gorgeous day.
Scott's family owns a little cottage within walking distance to the beach. When you drive up along the coast to get to York, you're suddenly hit by the smell of salt and seawater and fresh air. It's the best smell ever and it's something I look forward to every time we drive up. When you get to York in the summer, it's usually a bit crowded (nothing like Connecticut or Rhode Island beaches, though) with families and RVs and vacationers. When you go up after the summer though, and into September, the place clears out. It's pretty underpopulated the rest of the year and it's gorgeous. It's wonderful to take walks on the beach to collect sand dollars (all dark!) and seashells, and poke around for craps and clams. The water is blue and you can see forever. There are boats and surfers and even a little town. This place is very family-friendly. I love coming here every summer. Plus, it's about a five minute drive to the Kittery Outlets!
I actually took this picture!

Nubble Light

York Beach, Maine is also home of the famous Nubble Light whose history, I'm embarassed to say, I know very little about. Although, I can say that Nubble Light is pictured in many lighthouse calendars and magazines. There are two ice cream places within walking distance (Fox's and Brown's), but in the summer, the lines are usually pretty long. Also, some people like to go fishing here.

Sunrise on the ocean.

And this is a picture of a beautiful sunset we witnessed last summer. As you can see, the sunset is always more beautiful when cast upon the ocean.

Pros:"This is a wonderful family place."
Cons:"It gets overpopulated in the summer."
In A Nutshell:"I love York Beach. It is the most relaxing place in New England."
