Russian settlement

Barentsburg is a Russian settlement on Svalbard. It has around 700 russian and ukainian inhabitants. It is more or less built on top of the coal mine.

I came here on a boat trip from Longyearbyen. The place is very grey and poor, but still very fascinating. We had a guided tour, which took around 30 minutes. There is one street, a museum, a post office, a hotel and a souvernir shop.

Coal mine

The snow around Barentsburg was very black from pollution. The power plant was the first thing we spotted getting in to Barentsburg. Our guide told us that the russian coal company is planning to build a new power plant next year.

Too bad you did not make it to the museum - I found it very very interesting! Hahaha: a restaurant that only serves Vodka .... nothing seems to be impossible in Barentsburg!!
