When the Arabs arrived in the 7th century, they named the city El-Uksur, "palaces" - which later became Luxor, one of the most monumental cities of the ancient world. Modern Luxor was built on the site of Thebes, the capital city of ancient Egypt's New Kingdom (1550-1069 B.C.) The Nile divides the "Land of the Living" (Karnak and Luxor Temples) from the West Bank or "Land of the Dead" (the tombs contained in the Valley of Kings & Queens, and the mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut). The lively town of Luxor itself should be given a closer inspection for it's Egyptian hustle bustle and charm. Shops, markets, outdoor food vendors, back alleys, caleche traffic and the local cacaphony of commerce contribute to the overall experience.
