Aswan, Egypt's southenmost city, got my vote for the prettiest spot of my Nile cruise. The large white sails of the feluccas crisscrossing the river contribute to it's enchanting beauty. The Nile is wide and serene here as it flows around giant granite boulders and islands covered with plam groves.
During the time of the Old Kingdom, Aswan guarded Egypt's southern frontier. Later it became a thriving marketplace of the ancient caravan routes and today boasts one of the most fascinating souks outside Cairo. The city itself is modern yet laid back, with a population of 220,000. Half is made up of Nubians, who were displaced to this area when the High Dam swamped their villages. |
