Festivals & Holidays: Annual Chicago Turkish Festival
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Since 2003, the Turkish festival is held each year. In 2007 it was from the 30th of May until the 2nd of June. Event takes place at the Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington Str.

Once there, you can buy some coconut juice ($3), kebabs (lamb, chicken), jewelry (Turkish eye), carpets; watch lovely dancers perform, look at fashion show (two girls presenting traditional Turkish costumes), witness Dervishes religious dancing (do not applaude after they are done), hear some flute and drums (also watch how drummer spins his drums with his teeth - look at my pic #2).

I had a lovely time there, although the sun was burning. Wish I took a hat or something.

It is free of charge, opened from 10 AM to 6 PM CST. Free live performances take place between noon and 2 PM.

To Get There: Take blue line to downtown, get off at Washington metro station.

ADVICE: Bargain when buying jewelry! When I was buying a braslet, the guy told me it was five bucks. After I said I`ll buy it for 'four' he agreed so fast, I wish I said 'three'. :-)

Theater & Music: Grant park music festival
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Held in the outdoor Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, this summer festival is the nation's only remaining free, outdoor classical music event.

Series begin in the middle of June and last until the middle of August.

Days: Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays usually. Very rarely Tuesdays.

    Time: 6.30pm-8.30pm.

Rules: Photography is not permitted during the performance, video taping is not permitted at all times, cell phones should be switched off.

Advice: Come an hour early to get seats, if you do not want to sit on the lawn. First 20 or so rows are for the members, the rest is free. On my picture #1, everything you see is reserved for the members, my row is the 1st free one.

  • This largest free show of its kind is held on the lake front in August.

    2007 details:

LOCATION: From Fullerton to Oak Street. North avenue beach is the focal point.
    DAYS:
    Friday, 17th - practice.
    Saturday,18th and Sunday,19th - the actual show.
HOURS: Water show runs from 9 till 10 am. Air show runs from 11 until 4pm.
ADVICE: Bring chairs, umbrellas, food and drinks, hats and sunglasses. Come early to pick a good spot (above the ground or closer to the lake), cause it gets really crowded. Or better come see the show on the practice day - less people, same performance.
You can skip the water show part - it was just a couple of jet skis doing something on the water.. Boring.

If you want to have a better view, go to this website. It offers 5 unique (rather expensive) ways to do it. Like, watching the show from kayak on Montrose beach ($50)..

A fine Chicago page with some unusual tips. Nice to know what is FREE on which days. For my first year on VirtualTourist, my motto was: "It's a beautiful day in Chicago!"
