"Second City" The "Second City" name comes from Chicago's historical position as America's second largest city. I also heard that Chicago got this nickname after Great Conflagration took place in October, 1871 and the city had to rebuild itself literally from the ashes. For me it is Second indeed, because it is my second American home after Michigan. :-) So much life, so much to see, to explore... My hands itch to just go out and start taking lots and lots of pictures. :) And that I will! |
"City of Big Shoulders" That`s where skyscrappers have been born.. Nowadays Cichago has 1,056 skyscrapers inside its city limits, second only to the 5 boroughs that comprise New York City and more than twice as many as Los Angeles. It also has the tallest building in the United States, the Sears Tower. |
"Gem Of The Prairie" Chicago got this name probably after the book with the same name written in 1940 by Herbert Asbury. It was about Chicago underworld (red light districts, gangs and such).
Other names are:
Chicago, Pride of the Rustbelt City in a Garden Hog Butcher to the World "I Will" City Windy City |

Nemorino Fri Apr 11, 2008 14:21 UTC A fine Chicago page with some unusual tips. Nice to know what is FREE on which days. For my first year on VirtualTourist, my motto was: "It's a beautiful day in Chicago!" | nixca316 Wed Mar 21, 2007 07:01 UTC Hello pretty Mila! It's been a while since I visited my cousins in Chicago. It's glad to read about places that are good to visit here at VT. Take care! |
