'Honolulu' literally means 'sheltered bay'.
It is not known when the city was built exactly, but Polynesians already lived there in the 12th century.
In 1794 Captain William Brown of England became the first foreigner to come there.
Hawaii (and its capital Honolulu) were a monarchy until 1893 when the last Hawaiian queen Lili`uokalani was overthrown.
In 1894 the Republic of Hawaii was proclaimed and the decendent of white rich Protestant missionaries Sanford B. Dole became its president.
In 1898 America`s annexation of Hawaii took place.
In 1959 Hawaii became a US state.
