Tokyo is part of Japan prefecture and divided into cities. Each city has their own centre and they are comparable to one another. As a whole Tokyo is huge and spread out and well organised clean modern city. Tokyo is a young city as large part was destroyed by earthquake in 1923 and it was flattened in the final days of 1945.
Originally Tokyo was known as Edo. She became Japan's political centre in 16th century and grown into one of the world's most populous cities. Much later during Meiji restoration Edo became the capital city of Japan and renamed Tokyo (eastern capital). It was moved from Kyoto to Edo.
The city landscape of Tokyo consists of temples and shrines, quiet nature reserve in the middle of Tokyo, modern futuristic architecture on a man made island of Odaiba. You’ll find replica Statue of Liberty, suspended Rainbow Bridge, Eifel Tower look a like and Ginza the shopping Mecca of Tokyo. At night Tokyo neon light shine on brightly almost futuristic. There are historical buildings dated as far back as 90 years. The historical Edo Castle (Imperial Palace) only opens to public for two days in a year (23rd December and 2nd January).
For the electronic freak Akihabara will fix your addiction, plenty of video games the characters mainly derived from Japanese comics. You’ll find the latest camera, television, talking robot, electronic gadgets and so on. The elaborate vending machines with so many items you can choose from, the machine are everywhere in Tokyo, would you believe vending machine sells umbrellas. Tiny booth serving ramen noodles. Everything I see in Tokyo is done to perfections even to packaging their vegetables at the grocery shops, almost like an art.
It is expensive city for the Aussie dollars. When you come to Tokyo bring lots of money. There are plenty to see and plenty to do. Tokyo has one of the best transportation systems in the world. The people are friendly, polite and still follow their traditions. Communications could be a problem but usually people speak English at major shopping centre, government official at railway station, hotels, popular restaurants. The sign at railway station are in Japanese and English, street names are written in roman alpahabet. |
