Australia Capital City

Hi and welcome to Canberra my hometown. Yes it is true that Canberra is full of politicians and bureaucrats, but it’s not true that Canberra is a boring city.

Canberra was selected to become the capital city of Australia as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne. Walter Burley Griffin the Chicago architect from USA won the competition and design Canberra. It is a planned city and lay out around an artificial lake. The population of Canberra is about 320,000 with 75 percent of the population is Australian born. Large percentages of the over seas born are from United Kingdom and New Zealand’s.

Canberra is a clean city with no pollution, a well plan and a safe city.

Canberra location is ideal, not too far to the beach of South Coast is about two hours drive to Batesman Bay. Two hours drive to the snowy mountains in Thredbo. Three hours drive to Sydney. From Civic the central business district of Canberra it is half hour drive to the wineries area of Murrumbateman with a climate similar to Bordeaux area of France.

Canberra has four seasons. Autumn with maximum average temperature of 19c (Mar to May), winter 11c (Jun to Aug), spring 19c (Sep to Nov), summer 27c (Dec to Feb). In winter the minimum temperature can fall to below zero centigrade. In summer is hot and dry.

Canberra is a multicultural city. Large numbers of Canberra population is born overseas. Naturally it has many restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world Italian, Greece, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, Thai, Malaysian, Russians, Turkish and Chinese. Also seafood, steak house, vegetarian restaurants plus pub food can be found. Kingston, Manuka, Civic, Dickson, O'Connor and Lyneham are the main concentrated areas.

There are many clubs in Canberra. If you are into poker machine or a just night out for a drinks or a meals, or feeling groovy and urge to tango with your partner, clubs is the place to hang loose. Most of the clubs in Canberra serve bistro type of meals. The Hellenic club in Woden have three great restaurants. Other clubs like Southern Cross, Ainslie football club, Labour club also a good place to enjoy your self.

Visit the Sunday art and craft market at the Kingston Old Bus Depot or the Glass house next door from the market.

You can sharpen your intellect by visiting the beautiful galleries and museums. Clustered around Lake Burley Griffin you will find the National Art Gallery, National Library, the Old Parliament House, the Aboriginal Embassy, the New Parliament House (best known landmark), National Museum, National Science and Technology, the National and Film Archives, War Memorial.

Being the Australian national capital, Canberra is home to many embassies. Many of the embassies welcome visitors.

There are four major mall and plaza for shopping located in Civic, Woden, Belconnen and Tuggeranong Mall.

Canberra celebrates many festivals. The Floriade in spring in mid September to October attracts many tourists to ACT. The Summernats car festival attracts motor enthusiast in December/January. Multicultural festival in February celebrates cultural diversity, featuring international music and dances, theatre, films, craft and experiencing international cuisines. In March is Canberra Day discovering the history of Canberra. In April listens to excellent national and world folk music at the Canberra Folk festival.
