The city of Yogyakarta or locally known as Jogja is located in the island of Java and is the capital of the province. It is the only province in Indonesia governed by Sultan (Muslim king). The current ruler is Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X. The Kraton or the Sultans Palace where the Sultan reside lies in the middle of the city and the rest of the city are the tentacles.
Tourist’s visits the city are attracted by the famous monument of Borobudur and Prambanan.
Yogyakarta is well known for its rich in traditional Javanese fine art and culture. The most well known is the art of making Batik. The batik from Jogja has geometric pattern which is a unique style. The word Batik is an Indonesian-Malay word and means to dot.
The Wayang Kulit (leather shadow puppet), Wayang Golek (rod puppet) are also popular. Most of the wayang stories are from the Hindu epics of Mahabharata or the Ramayana. Other art such as the traditional orchestra of gamelan usually accompanied the classical dance.
Jogja is also home for higher education, Gajah Mada University caters student from all over Indonesia and as well from overseas.
In general I think Yogyakarta is one of the best-preserved cities in Java. The high rise building like in Jakarta has not yet risen. For me it was a well worth visit. |
