Northern France

by Kimber_jewel - last update: Apr 21, 2006

More than just a booze cruise.

Taking the tunnel train from Dover England to Calais France is quick, easy, and sometimes very inexpensive. But taking the time to drive past Calais into the Northern France countryside and visit the small towns can make for a more enjoyable trip than just visiting Calais for a booze cruise.

Take a drive through the toll and see more

After you pass Calais there are several smaller towns with a less ‘eglish catered’ atmosphere.

Try :

Boulogne Sur Mer - France's biggest fishing port, with a big fish market. 34 km from Calais (on dual carriageway). A lively, interesting, town with lots of good restaurants, lots to see including the unfortunately named sea life centre 'Nausicaa'

Montreuil sur mer - 72 km from Calais (mainly dual carriageway). The walls can be walked round. They are high and give good views. Also a very impressive citadel
St Omer (mainly dual carriageway) - 59 km from Calais An interesting town. The Cathedral is probably the most beautiful intact vestige of gothic architecture to be found north of Paris, it houses a famous Rubens painting of Christ being removed from the cross as well as an incredible astrological clock, said to be one of the oldest clocks in France, dating from 1558
