Miami

MIAMI - FACTS

Miami is located in the south-eastern Florida and was founded in 1836, but first officially incorporated as a city in July 1896. In 1896, a local citrus grower, Julia Tuttle, saw the potential in Miami, and convinced Henry Flagler (a railroad tycoon) to extend his Florida East Coast Railroad to Miami. The population was then only just over 300, but with the arrival of the railroad, new entrepreneurs followed and the development of Miami started.

Miami grew very fast - but especially during World War II then the city played an important role in the battle against German submarines. In the 1960’s and 1970s many Cubans emigrants also increased the population; alone in 1965 more than 100000 Cubans arrived at Miami.

Today Miami is a major international financial and cultural centre with a population of over 400000. The metro area around Miami is one of biggest in the United States with more than 5 million people. Miami has three official languages: English, Spanish, and Haitian/French Creole; actually Miami has the largest Spanish-speaking population in the western hemisphere (excluding Latin America).

Miami was in 2008 voted as "America's Cleanest City" in the Forbes Magazine.

Holiday Inn South Beach

MY VISIT

My first visit to Miami was in 1987 - then Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas was the ‘Miami Vice’… It was my first trip overseas and I stayed one week at Hotel Barcelona at Miami Beach. 1987… long time ago…

In 2004, I visited Miami again and stayed 4 days at Holiday Inn South Beach on Collins Avenue, Miami Beach – a nice hotel with only 50m to the beach. I like Miami for its Latin-American culture and the many buildings in Art Deco style. The beaches are fine, but absolute not the best in the World. I also found the bars and restaurants rather expensive, and many of them to fancy for me.

The Everglades and Key West are within driving distance from Miami, and also worth a visit.
