| | FREDERIKSHAVN - FACTS Frederikshavn is a cosy port town in the northern part of Jylland. Frederikshavn started as a fishing village in the 16th and 17th centuries and it was fortified in the late 17th century to secure the route to Norway. The original name was Fladstrand (Flat Beach) but was changed to Frederikshavn (Frederik’s Harbour - after King Frederik VI) when it received status as a merchant town in 1818.
Frederikshavn was hit hard with unemployment when the city's largest workplace, the shipyard Danyard, closed in the late 1990s. This resulted in more than 2000 workers being unemployed, but many new innovative projects were started - which are retaining population and attracting tourists. And Frederikshavn has many tourists; the ferry traffic from Norway and Sweden makes it a transit point for many people and the city can offer a number of shops corresponding to a Danish city of 80000 inhabitants instead of its 30000. Today Frederikshavn is an important centre for overseas trade, shipbuilding, fishing and related industries. |
| | MY VISIT I visited Frederikshavn in July, 2008 and stayed there for 4 nights. First of all I used the town as a base to explore the northern part of Denmark (Læsø and Skagen), but I also had time to have a closer look at Frederikshavn. I think the town is a pleasant and cheerful place with a great pedestrian street (Gågade) where you find everything you need in shops, cafes and restaurants. The town is famous for its plaice, and that was also one of my favourites on the menu card.
Frederikshavn has an amazing nature with the sea and hills. A walk along Dronningestien and through Bangsbo Park is a must. I really enjoyed my stay in Frederikshavn.
(Please notice that many hotels in Frederikshavn are fully booked in the middle of July during the Dana Football Cup).
