| | THE HISTORY OF COPENHAGEN The history of Copenhagen goes way back and there is evidence that Copenhagen existed as a settlement over 6000 years ago. The first written record goes back to year 1043 and at that time Copenhagen was just called “Havn” (Harbour) and was of little strategic or political importance.
From the middle of the 12th century Copenhagen grew in importance because of its position between the royal seat in Roskilde (west of Copenhagen) and the religious centre of the Cathedral of Lund (now Sweden). Bishop Absalon fortified the city in 1167 – the year traditionally marking the foundation of Copenhagen. In year 1443, King Christoffer III moved from Roskilde to Copenhagen and the city became the capital of Denmark.
An important figure - in the history of Copenhagen – was King Christian IV (1577-1648). He is probably Denmark’s best-known king and was also known as the Architect King. The King was responsible for many of Copenhagen's finest buildings and quarters: Rosenborg Castle, the Round Tower, parts of Christiansborg Castle, the Stock Exchange, Nyboder, Christianshavn and more…

| | COPENHAGEN TODAY Copenhagen is Denmark’s largest city with a population slightly more than 1 million and is home of the national parliament, the government and the monarchy. Despite Copenhagen is the largest city in Denmark, it is very easy to navigate in the centre of Copenhagen. The Tivoli Garden, Strøget, Nyhavn, the Town Hall, Rosenborg Palace, Amalienborg Palace are all located in the centre and nearly everything is within walking distance from the Town Hall – or you could rent a city bike.
Copenhagen moves outdoor when the weather is nice. You could take a long stroll down Langelinie (with the Little Mermaid, Kastellet and Amalienborg Palace) and maybe enjoy a picnic in a city park or at one of the many great outdoor cafés and restaurants in the city centre. Canal tours are recommendable on a sunny day - and why not end your sightseeing with a beer in Nyhavn. The Tivoli Garden is also beautiful - especially after sunset when it is decorated with lights.
On a rainy day you could explore some of the many museums and I would recommend Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, the Carlsberg Visitor Centre and the National Museum. The palaces in the centre of Copenhagen are also worth a visit: Amalienborg Palace (home of the Danish royal family), Christiansborg Palace with the Danish Parliament (Folketinget) and the Royal Reception Rooms and Rosenborg Palace with the royal crown jewels.
This is just a few suggestions – and is some of the more mainstream tourist sights in Copenhagen. You can find much more inspiration in my Copenhagen Tips… and you are always welcome to contact me if you need any information about Copenhagen…

Copenhagen has been my hometown since 1994, and I now live in Valby which is a suburb just outside the centre of Copenhagen. There have been a lot of city improvements in Valby in the recent years and I think it is now a really nice part of Copenhagen. The main street, Valby Langgade, has many good cafés and a brand new shopping centre ‘Spinderiet’ has just opened with more than 50 shops. Valby is also home of the Danish brewery “Carlsberg”…
