  • Stokken and Sdr. Nyland are two small islands located on the south-western coast of Læsø. The islands were created by a combination of material drift from the north coast and land-raising.

You can wade out to the islands and Stokken has a really nice sandy beach – but the water gets quickly deep, so please be careful. The beach used to be famous for its nude bathing, but now it is a common Danish beach where you do whatever you prefer…

The area has many birds and is protected from 15/4 to 15/7 because of the breeding birds. Some species of terns can become aggressive if you go too near their nests. With the many birds this is a popular place for bird watching and other activities are fishing and to collect mussels.

    Things To Do: Rønnerne

  • Rønnerne is located on the south coast of Læsø and is one of the most unique salt meadow areas in Denmark. The area has tidal flats, salt meadows, moors, small fresh water lakes and commons and therefore there are a lot of different plants and animals. The area is home and stop-over place to countless waders and water fowls.

Rønnerne is a nice place for a walk – but there are also guided tours available with a nature guide (in a horse-drawn carriage or on a tractor bus).

You should also visit the Rønnertårnet (Rønner Tower) where you have a nice view of the protected area. The tower is located near Læsø Saltsyderi (Læsø Seething Hut).

  • Læsø Saltsyderi (Læsø Seething Hut) is located in the southern part of Læsø and is a working exhibition which demonstrates the ancient craft of boiling and extracting salt.

The conditions for salt production were (are) perfect on Læsø with extremely salty ground water and large forest reserves, which were used for fuel. In the 14th and 15th century there was a large industrial production and there were more than 1000 seething huts on the southern part of Rønnerne (read my other tip).

Every hour there is a free guided introduction to the production of salt. You can also try to make your own Læsø salt in mini pans for DKK 60.

(Their webpage is only in Danish).

    Things To Do: Museumsgården

  • Museumsgården (The Museum Farm) is a part of Læsø Museum, and is located just outside Byrum in the centre of Læsø. It is an outdoor museum of local cultural history and parts of the building can be traced back to about 1650.

The most impressive is the large roof which is laid with seaweed (eelgrass). Seaweed was a traditional building material on Læsø; it looks impressive and heavy, but it is actually quite light and insulates quite well. The timbering is also related to the sea as it is driftwood or from shipwrecks. It is said that it takes 17 good wrecks to build a whole farm. The people on Læsø had to use the materials that were available to them at that time.

The furniture appears today as it did in around 1860 and there are many interesting details inside Museumsgården.

Tickets to the museum also give access to the Maritime Museum (read my other tip) in Vesterø.

  • Søfarts- og Fiskerimuseet (The Maritime Museum) is located in the oldest house (from 1872) in Vesterø. The museum displays objects from Læsø’s fishing and maritime history. There are exhibitions of fishery – and you can learn more about long line fishing, Danish seine trawling, setting up traps, lobster fishing with pots and much more… Furthermore information about the local lifesaving service and of violent storms and shipwrecks.

In 1982 a great silver treasure from 1670 was found on Læsø, and parts of the treasure are also on display at the museum. The museum is not very big, but has a few interesting details.

Tickets to the museum also give access to Museumsgården (read my other tip) in Byrum.

    Things To Do: Læsø Tower

  • Læsø Tower is a 17 m high, red tower built of homemade, semicircular bricks. The tower was erected in 1927 in Byrum in the centre of Læsø by clog maker Thorvald Hansen.

There is a view of the countryside from the tower, but I don’t think the view is very special. Only visit the tower if you are in Byrum area - I wouldn’t go to Byrum just to see the tower.

    Things To Do: Byrum Kirke

  • Byrum Kirke (Byrum Church) was built by monks from Vitskøl Monastery in the 1100-1200s in the Romanesque style. There was a wave of building work throughout the country and around 800 parish churches were built – among them three on Læsø, and the churches in Byrum and Vesterø (read my other tip) are still standing.

Byrum Kirke is the oldest and biggest of Læsø’s medieval churches and is actually one of the oldest in Denmark. It is one of very few red-washed churches (like the one in Vesterø).

I wasn’t inside the church – just found it to be a beautiful old red-washed church.

  • Vesterø Søndre Kirke was built around 1250 in Romanesque style and is one of few red-washed churches in Denmark. The tower was built in Gothic style and added to the church around year 1550. The church was renovated in 1996.

I wasn’t inside the church - but Vesterø Søndre Kirke is famous for its murals from around 1510. The murals show the three holy kings on their way to praise Jesus.
