| | SKAGEN - FACTS Archaeological finds indicate that Skagen was founded in the 13th century. In 1413 Skagen must have had a certain economic and political status as it received the privileges of a royal municipality. It was fish that formed the town’s wealth and especially dried, salted fish was exported to the most of Europe.
There was a crisis in the fishing industry during the 17th and 18th centuries, but a new harbour and new fishing gear gave Skagen another fishing boom in the 19th century. At around the same time, painters, poets and authors discovered Skagen. They were fascinated by the light and the landscape, and many famous paintings by The Skagen Painters shows daily life from Skagen. You can see some of the paintings at Skagens Museum and in Michael and Anna Anchers House. Today, Skagen has around 9000 citizens and is Denmark's largest fishing port as far as the size and value of the catches are concerned. Skagen has - in high summer - the most hours of sunshine in all Denmark, and this turns Skagen into one of Denmark’s most fashionable holiday destinations. The small town is really crowded with tourists during the summer.

| | MY VISIT I have visited Skagen several times with my parents, but this was “many” years ago. Therefore I decided to visit Skagen again in 2008 during my stay in Frederikshavn. There is train directly from Frederikshavn to Skagen and the trip only take about 30minutes.
Skagen is a special place with a nice pedestrian shopping zone and many great restaurants with especially fish specialities. But the town was very, very, very crowded with tourists…
