I visited Bongani in November 2003, and stayed two nights at the Bongani Mountain Lodge. A luxury place in the African bush with clean rooms, very friendly staff, and good food.

The wildlife in the area was great and we saw buffalos, elephants, rhinos, lions, giraffes, and lots of antelopes on our daily game drives. Our afternoon drives always ended with a sun-downer drink in the African bush. It was a bit strange sitting in the open field, only a few hundred meters from where we just saw a rhino… On one of the game drives, we had a close encounter with a elephant family. We were driving on a small dirt road, but stopped when we heard an elephant herd came crashing through the vegetation. The herd crossed the road just behind our jeep, and the big male elephant was standing guard between us and the younger elephants. Our ranger now slowly drove towards the elephants, and the male raised its big ears and trunk – looking very threatening. I’m sure the ranger knew what he was doing, but I have never felt so small before…

The rangers from Bongani were great, and I especially remember December and Absalom. Besides the game drives, they also gave us a tour of the Bongani area and we visited a cave with old rock paintings and a small community. A nice additional experience.

Hi,saw the photos-brought back wonderful memories for me.Stayed there in 04-my fav places in the world.Ive never been back to a place twice yet, however,I only have 2 more places left on my list, so in 2010 I will hopefully go back to Bongani. Best Ann
