Hotel Marine

Port Elizabeth (short: PE) is situated in the Eastern Cape Province - 770 kilometres east of Cape Town - and is one of the major seaports in South Africa. Back in November 2003, I stayed one week at the Hotel Marine. It was a nice hotel with friendly staff, but on the outskirts of the tourist area and with the smallest pool I have ever seen.

PE was the last stop on my tour of South Africa, and after many exciting experiences in the national parks, I just wanted to relax and get some tan. Most of the time I hang out at the beach and around the Boardwalk, the big entertainment centre with restaurants, bars, casino, and much more… but also managed to squeeze in a couple of guided tours… First a city tour and later a very interesting trip to one of the local townships.

FC Copenhagen (a football club from my hometown) had a football school in PE, and I met a lot of locals wearing their football shirt. This was a good way to start a conversation and people were very friendly - and very interested in football…
