JARABACOA - FACTS

Jarabacoa is a municipality of the La Vega province in the Dominican Republic, and is also known as “The City of Everlasting Spring” or “Switzerland of the Tropics”. Jarabacoa has a temperate climate and I was told that Jarabacoa is the only place in the Dominican Republic where you can grow strawberry - but I’m not sure it’s true…

Jarabacoa is located in the Dominican Alps (mountains of the Cordillera Central) - about 600 m above sea level. One of the main tourist attractions is the mountains and natural beauty of the area: waterfalls, swimming holes, and opportunities for hiking and horseback.

MY VISIT

I stayed one night in Jarabacoa in November 2006. Two years before I wanted to visit the town, but the roads were closed because of heavy rain. I stayed at Hotel Gran Jimenoa a few kilometres outside city centre, but with a fabulous view of the Jimenoa River.

The climate was very pleasant – maybe like a summer day in Denmark… On one of the few good summer days we have ;-)

I've taken a "swim" at La Confluencia (where Yaque del Norte and Jimenoa rivers converge), on the side of the Jimenoa. I commend you for visiting places that are off the beaten path :)
