SANTO DOMINGO - FACTS

Santo Domingo - the capital city of the Dominican Republic - has been an important seaport for more than half a millennium. Even though his brother Bartolome chose the spot and began the foundation of the City in 1496, it is Christopher Columbus' name that will be forever associated with this City that lays claim to being the site of the first fort, the first cathedral, the first monastery, the first university, the first hospital and the first palace to have been built in the 'New World'.

In 1930, the city of Santo Domingo was almost completely demolished by a tropical hurricane, but Dictator Rafael Trujillo reconstructed the city and named it Ciudad Trujillo after himself. After his assassination in 1961, Ciudad Trujillo became Santo Domingo de Guzman as today's actual name.

The city is located on the south central coast of the island of Hispaniola and has a population of estimated 2.5 million.

MY VISIT

I have visited Santo Domingo three times (last visit was January 2008), but only for a couple of days each time.

Santo Domingo is a city full of history - and the historic sights have been my top priority when staying in Santo Domingo. If you are looking for beautiful beaches, Santo Domingo is not the right place - there are so many beautiful beaches and resorts in other parts of the Dominican Republic. Visit Santo Domingo because of its history and especially the area around Zona Colonial (the Colonial District) is very interesting.
