| | MANAUS - FACTS Manaus is the capital of Amazonas and situated on the Rio Negro, just 10 kilometres upstream from the point where Rio Negro meets the Solimoes and forms the Amazon (Rio Amazonas). The population is about 1.5 million.
In 1669, the Portuguese built a fort in order to explore and defend the region, and around the fort, a small village began to grow and later became the city of Manaus. In the local native language, Manaus means ‘Mother of God’.
The rubber boom hit Manaus in the middle of the 19th century, and it was a fantastic economic boost. Many immigrants came to Manaus with the purpose to get rich. The rubber boom was an era of great luxury and many local buildings were built entirely of material imported from Europe. Examples are the famous ‘Teatro Amazonas’ opera house and the ‘Mercado Municipal’ market (read my tips).
With the end of the rubber boom, Manaus went into a very hard time, but a turning point was reached in 1967, when the Manaus Free Zone was established. From that date on, the city has passed through great changes, becoming an important industrial centre for the manufacture of electrical and electronic goods. Manaus is today also an important centre for ecological tourism.

| | MY VISIT I spent 10 fantastic days in the Manaus area in November 2005: First 7 days in the jungle - living on a river boat – and later 3 days in Manaus itself (at Hotel Brasil). The jungle tour was an absolute fantastic experience and you can read more about my journey on my travelogues:
'Amazonas - Part 1: Com Te Caio': A short presentation of the crew (Nigel, El Capitão, Pablo and The Chef) and information about the river boat, named Com Te Caio. 'Amazonas - Part 2: Jungle Activities': Activities in the jungle... piranha fishing, shake hunt, caiman hunt... 'Amazonas - Part 3: Jungle Activities': More activities... jungle tours, native villages, sleeping in the jungle... 'Amazonas - Part 4: Birds, Wildlife and Fauna': Just some of the wildlife we saw in Amazonas... caiman, hoatzin, great egret, tarantula and more. 'Amazonas - Part 5: Birds, Wildlife and Fauna': More wildlife... cashew tree, beetles, vultures, peacock bass...
