I visited Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, for three days in November 2008. It was during the Water Festival, and the city was very crowded with visitors from all over the country. Boat races on the Tonlé Sap River was part of the Water Festival, and the riverbanks were packed with people cheering on their champion. I spent a whole afternoon just watching this fantastic scenery. Absolute amazing…

The two most emotional experiences in Phnom Penh was the Toul Sleng prison and the Choeung Ek (the Killing Fields). Both terrifying places, but they serve as an opportunity to honour the victims and to remember… Remember the terror so that it's not repeated!

The Silver Pagoda

When the Khmer Rouge was driven out of Phnom Penh by the Vietnamese in 1979, the city had become a completely ghost town. A long period of reconstruction began - and today, Phnom Penh is a lively and cosmopolitan city.

A tuk-tuk is a great (and inexpensive) form of transportation to get around the centre of Phnom Penh. However, the city centre is not that big, and if you have the time you can also walk between the sights. Many local people spoke good English and I only met friendly people. I had a nice stay…
