"Take nothing for 'granite'." Stone Mountain State Memorial Park by Herkbert

Stone Mountain, Georgia

We passed through Stone Mountain Natural Park during a trip to Atlanta. The mountain is a huge upcropping of granite, on which a huge relief is carved. The Confederate Memorial Carving depicts three Southern heroes of the Civil War: Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson. The figures measure 90 by 190 feet, surrounded by a carved surface that covers three acres, it is larger than a football field - the largest relief sculpture in the world.

This is what the fuss was all about?

As you can probably tell from the title, I wasn't overly impressed by the relief. With all the natural beauty that can be found in this country, I felt taken to have to pay a fee to get a clear view of it.
