Oxford was a delight to visit. The drive through the Cotswolds to get there was so relaxing and beautiful. Watching for the houses with thatched roofs and long stretches of rolling hills along with the occasional manor house made the time pass quickly.
The historical buildings and shops in town were great to wander through and take pictures. And of course, I once again learned many lessons while there.
Here in the states, we hear about Oxford and Cambridge Universities and I pictured these wonderful old schools. Little did i know that Oxford University is actually made up of about 40 individual colleges.
Christchurch (pictured above) is one of the oldest and most well known, but there are many others. Exeter College, St John's College and All Souls College are just a few of better known ones.
While wandering around Oxford, our guide pointed out a pastry shop and said Alice used to go there all the time. If you were a Smokie fan in the 70's, the proper response is "Who the hell is Alice?", but we just asked Alice who? He went on to tell us that it was Alice in Wonderland, of course. She was modeled after the Vice Chancellor's daughter by our old friend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson aka Lewis Carroll. In fact, the whole novel seems to be written with characters and buildings related to Oxford and Christchurch. The things you just don't know. :-)
- Pros:Beautiful place to just wander and enjoy.
