Venice is a place I've always wanted to visit. Since I first saw pictures of the city, I thought it would be a place like no other - and it was!
We spent three days there on our Italian holiday and left knowing that we would return. Many people zip through Venice seeing just the sites that the guidebooks say to visit. Unfortunately, by doing that they miss out on everything else Venice has to offer.
Do yourself a favor, don't follow the crowds, just wander through the city and you'll enjoy it even more. You'll come across the sites, but you'll see so much more and get to experience Venice. The history, the architecture, and most important, the people.
There are some really great pages on Venice that people have created. I am no Venice expert, but I'll try to show you some of the things that we saw and did. Venice is something different to everyone who visits. Some people won't like it, others will think it is just so-so - we loved it.

I very much agree with your assessment of the gondola ride. Personally, I didn't find it romantic in a lovey-dovey way, but it was just a fantastic experience overall.
I'm going to re visit Venice soon.

Tom, I read this page a year ago & followed many of your tips on our recent visit to Venice! The hotel was terrific! Only downside is that the prices in Venice have skyrocketed in my opinion!

You have made the most of Venice and found some good eating - btw it is Piazzale Roma - there is only one Piazza in Venice.
