PETRA - LOST CITY REDISCOVERED

by GandalfOnTour - last update: Apr 20, 2006

Put Petra on your LIST!!!

Looking down on the Theatre
I am being serious now when I say that this is one place not to be missed and it is so much more than just the facades carved out of the cliff faces. There is the breathtaking setting among the great chasms and the multi-coloured rock faces , the atmosphere of the manic and impressive hills, willing you to walk around the next corner or a little higher. And there is the sense that this is something completely unique. Walking through Petra is like swimming through the city of Atlantis... an interactive & living museum.

The Nabataean city is a marvel that was lost to the outside world for many years and was only rediscoverd by Burckhardt in 1812. Take some time to read about the history of the place, it will only add to your enjoyment of one of the greatest wonders ever built by man.

On the Street of Facades

Bring your walking shoes

Part of the attraction with Petra is that you can literally walk around inside the ancient site. There are plenty of walks to go on. The 2 most popular are the one that takes you up to the High Place of Sacrifice and the second that takes you to the Monastery. Both are great walks and will get the heart beating so be sure to have good shoes and plenty of water. For an easier option walk along the main 'road' in Petra along the street of Facades and on to the Roman Road. The Royal Tombs are not too far either.

.... and lots of film

Make sure that you have plenty of film or memory storage on your digital camera there are so many amazing scenes. 2 days in the minumum that I would recommend for taking in the sights of the remarkable place.
