Transportation: Overnight bus Tokyo-Kyoto
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Took an overnight bus from Tokyo in Kyoto. The bus moved very slowly (7-8 hours) and stopped to arrive at Kyoto in the early morning. So can save on accommodation and is much cheaper than taking the bullet train. Of course, most of the passengers are Japanese. Slippers, pillow, blankets as well as tea bags and hot water provided.

Getting TO/AROUND: I am surprised that there are time schedules of the bus arrival at the bus stop and that the bus arrives on time even during rush hours. A very convenient way to go around Kyoto to the various temples.

Enter the bus in front and if press a button to get a number. You will pay according to the number and where you get off. The next stop will be announced and will be displayed too.

A good opportunity to practise your Japanese, just try to remember the name of your destination or have it written in Japanese characters.

Generally fare within city is 220 Yen for adults and 110 years for children 6-12 years old.

Remember to ask where is the right bus stop so that you do not wait in vain.

Transportation: Kyoto Subway - Fast way
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: The Kyoto subway is a fast and efficient way to quickly get from one point to another. Though the line is limited, I combined it with the bus to get to way I want in shorter time and less hassle.

There is a north-south line and east-west line. Just remember the station number you want to get off. The Japanese names are fun but can all seem similar. "Zannen desune".

Recommend, take the subway to the furthest location and work your way back by bus.

Fare: 210-340 yen for adult, 110-170 yen for children.

    Transportation: Purchase bus-subway pass
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: To avoid the hassle of trying to predetermine your fare, correct change and waiting in line, you can purchase a one day or two day unlimited tourist pass for use of Kyoto bus and Kyoto subway system. Of course, the use of bus line is limited to certain city areas only.

Worth considering if you are using both systems often and rather not worry too much trying to read the Japanese sign boards

1,200 yen (adult), 600 yen (children) - 1 day pass
2,000 yen (adult), 1,000 yen *(children) - 2 days pass
