Kyoto Things to Do

Things To Do: Golden Pavilion Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kinkaku-Ji Temple is arguable the most recognizable temple in Japan and one you must visit in Kyoto. Even President George Bush took a photo in front of it with President Koizumi.

The lake garden is nice to walk around. Take plenty of photos and just enjoy the temple with the reflection on the water and the awe of tourists at its sight.

There is a Silver Pavilion Temple in Kyoto. Wonder if there is a Bronze version too.

Things To Do: Ryoanji Temple - Zen and meditation
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is my second favorite temple in Kyoto. I wish there was more time to just sit and contemplate looking at the rocks placed in a sea of raked designed fine gravel sand. There are like a world of islands in the sea. I also like the moss gardens and the gardens of this temple. You probably have seen many pictures of Ryoanji but spend a few minutes here when you are in Kyoto. It is one of a kind temple.

Things To Do: Kiyomizu Temple on the hillside
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is my 3rd favorite temple in Kyoto. A steep walk with many nice souvenir shops along the way to the temple. There is a large wooden columns supporting this temple as it is built on the slope of a hill. The surrounding hills are beautiful in autumn colorful foliage.

Many tourists and worshipppers seem to drink the water with a bamboo ladle. Wonder what it tasted like. You have to fight with the crowds of Japanese school children and okusan (mothers on tours) to get yourself into a picture. There is a great panaromic view of Kyoto from up there. Definitely a must-see temple.

Things To Do: Heian Shrine - stylized
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is my fourth favorite Kyoto temple/shrine. There is a sense of stoicism and rituals here. Apparently it was built to commemorate 1,100 years of Kyoto as the capital. It is actually rebuilt in 1976 after a fire. Many students bought lucky amulets. I liked the garden at the back of the shrine.

Things To Do: Kyoto Imperial Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kyoto was the capital and residence of the Emperor and his imperial family until 1868 when everything shifted to Tokyo.

The Palace is well maintained with impressive rooftops, hallways and an exquisite garden of trees, rocks and water.

There are daily tours in English and must book in advance with your passport.

Definitely worth the trouble. It is pretty and educational experience to understand more of Japanese culture and Imperial traditions.

The Philosopher's Walk: Philosopher's Walk in Kyoto
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is a nice popular trail to walk and ponder like a philospher. There is zen in the air.

The trail connects many temples and follows along a canal. You can see herons and willow trees and many cherry blossom trees.

Unfortunately it was a few days from cherry flower blooming when I was there. So I have to go back again.

Things To Do: Fan throwing festival
  • Tip Rating:
  • Every temple has its own special festival annually. Check what is going on when you are in Kyoto.

Took a bus outside Kyoto to this fan-throwing festival.

The priests will throw fans into the crowd below. I caught one and took it home. Suppose to bring good fortune and good health, I suppose.

Also round rice cakes, like "mochi" are thrown. I also got one but did not know what to do with it and gave it to a grateful local Japanese.

Things To Do: Aoi Matsuri Festival, every May 15
  • Tip Rating:
  • This city procession is one of the oldest dating from Heian period in the sixth century.

It is held only every May 15. I happened to be in Japan in Kyoto and planned my itinerary to coincid being in Kyoto on this very day.

The procession was imperial and sombre. There with no accompanying music.

Dcorated carts led by bulls and horses. There was a retinue of traditionally costumed messengers.

Location for viewing: Kamigamo and Shimogano Shrines.

Things To Do: Visit Kyoto Craft Center
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a worth-while stop to see all the traditional Japanese art and craft being demonstrated, displayed and on sale.

It is two floors and easily need an hour to spend even if you are just looking and not buying.

A nice break from all the temple walking in an aircondition environment. There are many tourists too.
