CHINATOWN: Do not forget to tip
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Unlike in Asia, you are expected to give a 10-15% tip at Chinese restaurants in San Francisco Chinatown and in USA. Unless, it is a quick take-away (to go).

Try these popular Americanized Chinese food:
    1) Gong Pu Chicken
    2) Mushi Pork (wrapping shredded meat and vegetables)
    3) Chop Sui Yee (mixed leftover, recooked)
    4) Lemon Sherbet (poor man's choice for ice cream)
    5) Fortune cookies

Go for dim-sum too, just do not forget to tip when the bill comes to avoid angry faces.

There is convenient underground public parking near Chinatown.

    General Tips: Visit Little Japan
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: There is a sizeable blocks of Japantown, off Geary Expressway between Gough Street and Steiner Street.

Great place for Japanese food, Japanese language learning material and free detailed travel information of Japan. I was planning my Japan trip and even bought my Japan Railway Pass ticket here.

If you cannot visit Japan, visit San Francisco Japantown.

Art / Other Museums: My favorite statue - The Thinker
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Was greatly surprised to run into this wonderful sculpture of Rodin entitled "The Thinker".

It is placed in a outdoor courtyard of the Legion Museum in Lincoln Park. It is as if the "man" is in deep thought oblivious of the beautiful surrounding around.

Have seen other Rodin's sculptures but the perfect outdoor setting made this my favorite.

General Tips: Day trip - Great America Theme Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Driving from San Francisco, took to US 101 south to Great America Parkway exit.

This is a fun day of roller coasters, wide crazy rides, great shows and favorite cartoon characters coming alive.

    Admission is pricey:
    Adult (ages 7 - 59) $51.99
    Child / Senior (ages 3-6, 60+) $34.99

Well, when bored and nice Californian Sunday, why not.

Architecture: Victorian Houses of San Francisco
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Driving around the neighborhood west of Van Ness Avenue, you will find beautiful maintained Victorian style houses along Pacific Heights, Western Addition, Haight and Fillmore.

These are elegant homes that were safe from the fire that broke out after the 1906 Great Earthquake.

There are six of Victorian houses in a row made famous and are called "Painted Ladies" of San Francisco. See if you can find them when you are there.

General Tips: City skyline from Treasure's Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: When crossing the Oakland Bridge betwen downtown San Francisco and Oakland, there is a island that you can exit from or enter into the bridge. It is called Treasure's Island.

What is fun is that you can get a amazing unobstructed skyline of San Francisco from the bay. You can park and take a quick picture like many tourists and it does not incur any toll.

Hans and I absolutely loved San Francisco. You managed to see most of the popular attractions in this wonderful city on the Bay. Also thanks Sl for visiting my new pages from Germany.

Thanks for visiting my Mauritius pages, SL. Great SF tips here! I was surprised to see a beach so close to Golden Gate Bridge. I like the sound of all those ethnic restaurants - sounds like there's plenty of good food in SF! :-)
