"Singa" means lion. The old name of Singapore with Tumasek. The island was secured from the Sultan of Johor by Sir Stamford Raffles who is known as the modern founder of Singapore.

Singapore was part of the new federation of Malaysia in 1963 but in 1965 became an independent republic.

National Museum - renovated and just reopen

Due to the currency it is also the most expensive. Yet Singapore is still one of the major shopping attraction for the variety and trend.

New casinos and theme parks are being planned and wil be one more reason to go to Singapore. OK, I do not work for Singapore Tourism Board but I always find Singapore always a destination value for money.

Nice new tips, SL! I also enjoyed eating at Food Junction in Raffles City...and I splashed out for a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar - nice as a one off, but I couldn't afford to drink too many of them! ;-)
