Things To Do: Where to go - north, south or central

  • Vietnam stretches from the north with the Gulf of Tonkin bordering China and Hainan Island (China) to the south with the Gulf of Thailand bordering Cambodia.

The long eastern coast facing the South China Sea with landlocked Laos on its long western border.

So most tourists will deicde whether to go North (Hanoi area) or South (Saigon - now called Ho Chin Minh City/HCMC). Then there is the imperial Hue and cultural Hoi Nan in the middle.

I took two separate trips - first to Saigon by overland from Cambodia and then flying into Hanoi from Singapore. It is possible to fly into Saigon and out from Hanoi and travel to all the places in between by land, rail or domestic flight.

There is a slight differences in the phrases and accent between North and South Vietnamese dialects but not to our untrained ears. English is used widely by local travel agents and in most places you can pay in Vietnamese dongs or in US dollars. So travelling in Vietnam is relatively easy.

    Things To Do: Vietnamese postcard
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is easy to find a small post office or a store selling Vietnamese stamps at most of the tourist towns or near tourist information centers. The main post offices of Hanoi and HCMC are in beautiful large historic buildings built during the French rule.

Why not surprise someone with a beautiful postcard of Vietnam.

Postage for Malaysia from Vietnam for postcard is 8,000 dong. Sounds a lot but less than 70 US cents.
