Hanoi, Tam Coc, Halong, Sapa

Halong Bay - Unesco natural heritage site

In the month of August, the weather in Hanoi was humid - like a sauna. Was soaked in my own sweat within minutes. Before coming to Vietnam, studied some Vietnamese which was helpful when bargaining a price.

There was the ritual walk around Hoan Kiem Lake in downtown Hanoi. However, I did not see any giant tortoise with a sword. But the lakes in Hanoi are still used by many ubiquitous motorcyclists as convenient place to pee.

Tam Coc is a nice day excursion but be warned that you can bang your head against the dark caves and be bullied into buying overcharged souvenir and/or giving tips by the boatman.
Ubiquitous motorcyles
Ho Chin Minh City (Saigon)

Lots of motorcycles, old French buildings and a lively Chinatown of beef noodles and mooncakes for the Lantern festival.

The palace has a good tour for those interested in the fall of Saigon. The Vietcong tunnels are fun but claustrophobic tourists should avoid crawling through the narrow burrows.
A postcard that I received.

Halong Bay is a wonderful place to stay overnight because the view is different throughout the day. Kayaking is fun but if you expect crystal clear water, you will not find it here.

Sapa night train ride is unforgettable. Hmong, highland rice fields and flocks of tourists make it a worthwhile trip.

Hi SL, great tips of Vietnam and bring back good memories! My mum will be going there on a tour soon, hopefully she will enjoy it :) As for me, will be flying off to Manila tomorrow, hope that the trip will not be affected by the typhoon
