The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Great Wall of China are my top must see in Beijing. The Ming tombs were incredibly empty.

Xian with the terracotta soldiers and horses, Shanghai with the Bund, Hangzhou and Suzhou for lakes, canals and silk and Guilin for the landscape were the first few places open to foreigners in the early 90s.

China is a large country from Urumuqi of Xinjiang in the west to Harbin of Heilongjiang in the north and to Sanya of Hainan island in the south.

If you do not understand Chinese characters and calligraphy or Chinese mythology and history, you will miss out on half of what your tour guide is trying to say.

Sp before going to China, going to the bookstore and reading out China long history and culture, learning a few Chinese characters will make your China visit a really great Chinese experience.

Chinese obsession for food is well known.

Basic guide is eat what the local eat. There is great variation from North to South. Mongolian hot pot, Beijing duck, Shanghainese dumplings and Cantonese dim sum. Stay away from exotic animal and fast food.

Spitting is still a way of life especially in the outskirts.. So do not get upset.. It is not rude, it is just Chinese.

Started with your China page. I liked warning tips & local customs. In India too a large population is in the habit of chewing tobacco, paan & Masala and spitting in public. Difficult to get rid of. We may shift our plans of Bangkok to China! Great info.
