China - My Roots

The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Great Wall of China are my top must see in Beijing. The Ming tombs were incredibly empty.

Xian with the terracotta soldiers and horses, Shanghai with the Bund, Hangzhou and Suzhou for lakes, canals and silk and Guilin for the landscape were the first few places open to foreigners in the early 90s.

China is a large country from Urumuqi to Harbin to Sanya. If you do not understand Chinese characters or Chinese history, you will miss out on half of what your tour guide is trying to say. Before going to China, going to the bookstore and reading out China long history and culture, learning a few Chinese characters will make your China visit a real Chinese experience.

Chinese obsession for food is well known.

Basic guide is eat what the local eat. There is great variation from North to South. Mongolian hot pot, Beijing duck, Shanghainese dumplings and Cantonese dim sum. Stay away from exotic animal and fast food.

Spitting is still a way of life especially in the outskirts.. So do not get upset.. It is not rude, it is just Chinese.

Hi SL. Thanks for stopping by my Bowness page. I am currently thinking about letting my girls go to China with their dad for a 5 week trip - good info.
