"North-East Trinidad" County of Saint David by Ruud_Buitelaar
County of Saint David Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 2 photos
When I saw that Virtual Tourist had no info at all on Trinidad's North East I decided to change that. The denomination "County of Saint David" seems to be obsolete or hardly used. For some purposes, it now falls under Sangre Grande region. Most people refer to it as Toco, after the main village on the Nort-East coast.
From Balandria to Matelot is for me a 1.5 hour drive along a rugged coastline; not for the distance but because the road is narrow, winding and in bad shape. It offers stunning views, good surfing but not good swimming. Traditional villages, where sometimes french creole is still heard, are complemented by weekend-houses of the well-heeled.
The main tourist destination north of Salybia is the village of Grande Riviere, an ecotourism hotspot famous for turtle watching. This being a rather remote place, you'll find a couple of decent hotels and surprisingly good restaurants, together with rooms for rent. The local community appears to be well organized, focusing on responsible management of their natural environment and in particular the turtles.
Trinidad has great potential for nature-based tourism. Grande Riviere offers arguably the country's best model for community involvement. When in Trinidad, take two days and visit the North-East.
- Pros:Beautiful coastline. Unspoilt and away from it all.
- Cons:A tricky drive. Not many tourist facilities.
- In a nutshell:Forget your worries but not your camera!
