Where the hell is Thorn Hill, Tennessee?

East Tennessee (Upper)

There ain't no honor in being poor.
Thorn Hill is not so much a place, as it is an area in Grainger County Tennessee. It is located along Hwy 25E South of the Cumberland Gap. It is about 15 miles from Tazwell in the North and 20 miles from Morristown in the South. The upper part of East Tennessee is like many economically depressed places in the US. It has cheap land, very low property taxes, a high sales tax (which includes food), poor wages, and few jobs. It is a place for Yankees from the North trying to get away from cold winters and high taxes. Lots of folks from Florida are heading here as well because of the relatively mild winters and lack of hurricanes. The indigenous population says that they can no longer afford to purchase land because the price has been driven up and out of their financial capabilities. Hancock and Grainger are the poorest counties in Tennessee.
Rocky Top

East Tennessee (Lower)

The lower sections of this part of the state are home to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, as well as Knoxville and Chattanooga. The three former cities serve as the gateway to The Great Smokey Mountains and the park of the same name is the most visited national park in the nation. Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee, home of the Tennessee Volunteers and Lady Vols and the and the most hated song in the SEC - "Rocky Top" (at least by Univ. of Tenn. opponents. Both Knoxville and Chattanooga serve up culture aplenty along with lots of other things to do.

Great Smokey Mountains

East Tennessee is known for the spectacular beauty of Appalachia. The Great Smokey Mountains National Park is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the US. The beauty of the area is spectacular as is the enjoyment of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville (home of Doll Parton and Dollywood). Bluegrass and country music is on tap throughout the area as well as every other kind of music.

Hi Don, I must admit I had to look at the map to see where this is -- not far from Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina. Interesting views of this poor but interesting region.
