The island in general Shetland is probably one of my favourite places in the world. I visited for a measly day and a half and fell in love with the place. It has beautiful rolling hills, deep blue water off the cliffs and mottled blue sea on the beaches. Sheep graze thoughtfully in fields and little Shetland ponies watch the cars drive past. The people are so friendly and trusting that you honestly feel welcome as soon as you talk to someone. Beautiful green grass grows abundantly but there are no trees. The funny thing is, I'd seen that there were no trees but I didn't really notice until someone pointed it out. It's a very strange concept for me as I live in an area chock full of trees. |
Ponies and Sheep I was thrilled to see little colonies of Shetland ponies roaming around the fields. I just HAD to stop at one point and feed them some grass. Only one was brave enough to come near and was rewarded with a lovely juicy mouthful of grass and a pat. They are so small! And there were foals there that had been born in the spring, they were so cute and little! I have never actually seen a completely black sheep with black wool before and was quite excited to see 3 at once. I immediately started singing "Baa Baa Black Sheep" |

We unfortunately had not enough time to also visit Shetland on our Scotland trip. | iwys Wed Mar 14, 2007 02:12 UTC What excellent tips. I really want to go there. Iceland has not trees either. | hunterV Thu Oct 12, 2006 17:46 UTC It turns out to be a splendid place to visit... |
