The duomo lit up at night
Milan's cathedral (the duomo) was built between the 14th and 19th centuries, a grand buiding with a Baroque exterior and Gothic spires. Its completion was ordered by Napoleon Bonaparte, who crowned himself King of Italy here in 1805. You can ascend to its roof (for a fee) to view the elaborate statues and sculptures (including one of Napoleon). The square in front of the cathedral, Piazza del Duomo, is usually teaming with tourists and activity.
Address: Piazza del Duomo
Directions: Nearest metro: Duomo.
Inside the duomo
The cavernous interior of the duomo contains several artworks and monuments, including the sarcophagi of two Visconti archbishops and Marco D'Agrate's St. Bartholomew statue.

The forearunner of malls...
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, built between 1865 and 1878, is a covered arcade just next to the cathedral. It has an arching glass and steel roof, and contains numerous shops and caffes.
Address: Piazza della Duomo / Piazza della Scala
Directions: Nearest metro: Duomo.
Outside La Scala
The Teatro alla Scala, Milan's famous opera house, was completed in the late 18th century, to replace a former theatre destroyed by fire. Its grand building has hosted the world premieres of several operas. You can purchase a cheap standby ticket on the day of the performance.
Address: Piazza della Scala
Directions: Nearest metro: Duomo.
The castle that Franscesco Sforza built
Castello Sforzesco, once home to the Sforza dynasty, now houses an art collection as well as a colony of cats cared for by the castle staff. The castle grounds are pleasant for a stroll, and the Parco Sempione, a large park, is located behind the castle.
Address: Foro Buonaparte
Directions: Nearest metro: Cairoli
Pussy cat
There are several cute cats that live in the Castle, clearly looked after by the staff who work there. They seemed quite tame, though a little hesitant with strangers.
Directions: Nearest metro: Cairoli.
Pinacoteca di Brera
This is Milan's most prestigious art gallery, housing many famous paintings and sculptures. The exhibition space is a bit drab however, and will only appeal to the seriously arty. It is closed on Mondays.
Address: Via Brera
Directions: Nearest metro: Manzoni
Via S Spirito
If you've come to Milan for clothes shopping, then head to via Montenapoleone, the location of the flagship stores of numerous Italian designers, including Armani, Versace and Prada. Bring your credit card!
Address: Via Montenapoleone and side streets
Directions: Nearest metro: Montenapoleone.
