Italian trendsetter

The city of Milan has, perhaps, always stood apart from the rest of Italy. Founded by the Celts around 600 BC as Medelhan, it flourished in the third century as a Roman trading centre. Its vulnerable position on the Lombardian plains subjected it to repeated raids from the Huns, Goths and Byzantines. In the late sixth century, the barbaric Lombards took control and wrestled semi-independence from the Holy Roman Empire. By the Renaissance period, Milan was a thriving cultural city governed by powerful families such as the Viscontis and Sforzas, with famous artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, in residence. Over the next few centuries, it became ruled by the French and the Habsburgs, before finally claiming independence with the unification of Italy. Today's Milan is a cosmopolitan city, the largest in Italy, an important European financial centre and a world fashion capital.

Culture, fashion, shopping, food...

A relatively compact city, the centre of Milan is dominated by the world's largest Gothic cathedral, and the city is stuffed with other important cultural sights, including at least two of international fame: Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper in the Church of Santa Maria della Grazie and the Teatro alla Scala. If it's shopping and high fashion you're after, there are the (expensive) boutiques along via M Napoleone and its off-shoots. And, finally, don't forget to sample the excellent Milanese cuisine.

Top 5 sights and things to do

1. Duomo
2. Teatro alla Scala
3. The Last Supper
4. Shopping
5. Castello Sforzesco

Nice page. One of my ambitions is to go to an opera at La Scala. I always take an interest in the local stray cats when I'm travelling too. I've adopted quite a few, over the years, in different parts of the world.
