KLIA Ekspres: From airport to city
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]

    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: KL International Airport is located notoriously miles from the city. An easy way to get to town is by train - the KLIA Ekspres (single ticket RM35, journey takes 28 minutes, trains run every 15-20 minutes) runs from the airport to KL Sentral, the city's train station located southwest of the city centre proper. Most people will have to catch a cab to their final destination - buy a ticket from the taxi counter. Note that KLIA Ekpsres only run from the main airport, not from the Low Cost Carrier (LCC) Terminal - God help you if you fly from there!

Alternatively, catch a cab direct from the airport by buying a ticket from the taxi counter - it cost about RM75-85 to the city centre and takes about 1 hour, traffic permitting.

Monorail: Cheap and quick though doesn't get you everywhere
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: KL remains a city built for cars, and therefore public transportation is not the best. The relatively new "metro" system consists of a mixture of ground-level trains (KTM Komuter lines), underground trains (the light railway system) and elevated trains (the monorail). Sadly, these lines are not particularly well integrated, even if some stations are located next to each other! And they don't go everywhere - indeed, some lines seem to go nowhere important! Still, the system will get you to some useful central locations, e.g. KLCC and the Bukit Bintang area with relative air-conditioned ease, and at very affordable prices (RM2 ish). The short monorail line is perhaps the most comfortable.

Taxis: KL cabs - a lottery

Getting TO/AROUND: Cabs are cheap in KL, with fares starting at RM2 - that is, if you are not cheated. You can flag them down anywhere. At busy times (rush hour and in the rain), locals can get quite aggressive at catching a cab. Catching a cab in KL is a bit like buying a lottery ticket. Some drivers are honest, some are not. Some will try and fix a price at the start of the journey - say no and if he refuses to use the meter, get out.
