Örbero is where one of my good friends live, and I have been there twice so far - for a real Swedish Christmas in 2005 and then again in May 2006.
Örbero is a beautiful city, especially in spring (as you can see in the picture here of the castle)
This page is a work in progress and I'll add some tips when I get the time, although to be honest I mostly just met my friend's family and friends and went to parties at peoples houses and didn't really get to see many 'touristy' things here.
I think it is a really lovely town to walk around in though, with markets, lots of shops, beautiful old buildings and some cool bars. It is definitely worth a visit if you are in Sweden. The people were really friendly, even when the only Swedish I could reply with was 'Hej Hej' |
History and random facts Örbero is the 7th largest city in Sweden, with a population of about 120,000 people. It is only 200km away from Stockholm and about 300kn away from Gothenburg, so it is a perfect place to stop over if you are travelling between the two.
The castle in the centre of the town originates from the 13th century. The river through the city - the Svartån is a good place for fishing as well.
You should also see their water tower - Svampen (the Mushroom) named so because it really does look like a big mushroom.
There are also some museums and galleries, as well as a concert hall.
Also, it is a good city to bike ride through, with lots of bike paths and lovely scenery in and around the city. |
| | My experience in Örbero Well firstly, I had my first 'white' christmas in Sweden which was great, and even better I got to have a real Swedish Christmas with all sorts of foods I had never had before like rödbetssallad (a beetroot salad), inlagd sill (pickled herrings I think), Swedish meatballs (well I guess I have had these before) and all sorts of other things. I also got to try saffron buns, julmust (which looks like coke (the drink that is!), but tastes like nothing I have ever tried before) and Glögg.
Also I go to play a game called Kubb in the park which basically involved throwing wooden sticks at other wooden sticks to knock them over... to explain it badly! This was really fun, even though I am not very cordinated!
I got to watch my first game of Ice Hockey - Luckily Sweden won... the world championship finals I think. Was a really good sport actually.
Hmm I also asked if the tins of snuff in the shop were cat food, which has meant I will be teased by my Swedish friends for the rest of time... but in my defence the tins DID look like little cat food tins, and I was tired... :P |
