Travel While You Can | On the Thames, with Canary Wharf in the background |
I have lived in London since August 2002 (I am originally from New Zealand)
London is the usual stomping ground for my kind: Antipodeans (Kiwi's, Aussies and SAFA's) doing their OE (Overseas Experience). The OE is basically, you move to the UK for as long as your visa will allow (I'm lucky, I have dual nationality so I can stay as long as I want), and do a power-travel trip around Europe seeing the sights, getting drunk and doing allsorts of things you wouldn't normally do at home! This can be done at any time, not just after University and before you start work. I know of a woman who didn't start her OE until all the kids had left home - she was 50 years old!
So that's why I'm here. Though in honesty, I'm not really like what I described above. I have a British Passport, I can live here legally and indefinitely. I'm not a drinker, and I travel at a much more leisurely pace, I own a home here and am quite settled. London isn't a "stop-off" point for me.
However, I do feel that my time in London is winding down. I've been here 4 years so far, I've nearly crossed off all my major travel desires - and those that are left are easily done from the sountern hemisphere. I've found a lovely guy in Graham and he is keen to move too. So our aim is to head back to New Zealand towards the end of 2007 |
