Hiking

Hiking on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau is fantastic. You can either bring your tent or you can walk from one cabin to another in a huge network of cabins. Some of them are hostels with high standard while others are more simple. The distance between them wary mostly from 3-8hrs walk. Sometimes the terrain is flat and easy to walk and sometimes it is rugged and difficult. The best cabin for many is the Rauhelleren. To get there the easiest way is to take a boat across the large lake Halne from the northern end by rv7(the road from Oslo to Bergen) and then walk a 4hour route. If you plan a trip to Hardangervidda you should plan carefully and contact the cabins in advance to check awailabillity. Try also to get a hold of a packing list so that you dont miss any neccesary things or carry to much weight around. Both these things can destroy a wonderful experience.

Hiking with kids

Its always smart not to pick the longest rout if you are hiking with your kids. The dstance between Sleipa and Heinseter is not so long.
With kids at this age you can normally double the time estimate for the route. 4 hours means "stay out all day".

Rauhellern

Photo of Rauhelleren and the large lake Langesjøen taken from the path that either leads to Stigstuv cabin or to Skaupa. Skaupa is the name of one of the 2 places you can be dropped of in the southern end of lake Halne. (4hrs). The trip to Stigstuv is estimated to 3-4hrs in easy terrain. A really nice walk.
