Book your train from home if you can.

I had a history teacher in collage that stated with the railroad made by the British, India got more out of the British rule the Britain ever got out of India. The railroad is still there and after travelling the country I have a hard time imagining India without it.

As overnight trains is a perfect transport for the long-distances in India. I like to give this advice as I travelled on a day to day basis and this poses some difficulties in acquiring tickets as there is so much corruption and the travel agents/cabdrivers/ticket officers have underhand agreements about kickbacks/commissions.

So my tip is that if you can purges your tickets in advance and plan your route and duration as much as possible from home you might avoided wasting a large part of your vacation on all the haggling and harassment and even save a good deal of money.

You can reserve and buy via. The website. DO BOOK IN GOOD TIME! Or you might not get a conformation. If you don’t get a conformation you will first get information 4 hours before the train departure if your waiting list ticket can be used. Otherwise you have to buy a regular ticket and hope for a possible upgrade.

Cycle rickshaws

Cycle rickshaws are not just a nice form of short distance transport it is also smart. The smartness of this transport from in India comes as there is so much hustling going on here. You can avoid being driven around in auto rickshaws from the one place to the other you don´t have any interest in. Just from the simple fact that the cycle rickshaw driver will get fatigued by such an endeavor and the one in the auto version don’t. I would even state that it sometimes the fastest transport given it’s more likely to give you a direct route to your destination.
