The palmhouse
The Botanic garden was first established around year 1600 as a medicinal herbgarden. In the 1870`s the Garden found its present form on the old bastions of the city. The lake in the garden has see a transformation from being a part of the moat surrounding the citywalls. As a part of University of Copenhagen it serve the purpose of being a part of the education of the biologist. For this purpose its has approximately 20,000 species from around the world, nearly all have been collected in the wild.
Behind the palmhouse (open 10-15) there is a beautiful little shop that sell plants, posters, books and seeds. The shop is open in the summer; from May till October. All days from 11.00-17.30. In the winter from October till May 11.00-15.30. Mondays closed.

Queen Margrethe II is the monarch of denmark, the oldest monarchy in the world.
If you like a look in to the rooms of some of the last functions of the danish monarchy you can take a guided tour. It will take about 50 minutes and has a admission fee of 50 kroner (around 8 $). The Guide we had was very informative and had a fine knowledge of the palace.
The tours are in english. To get on it you have to go to the inner yard of the palace.

Copenhagen university has a botanical garden in the center of town. Its has a display of trees, plants and flowers. For tropical plants it has some wonderful greenhouses, the first room in the large greenhouse (open10-15) you enter is the very best. I love to come there as it has butterflies and a pool with waterplants and fish.
Besides the botanics there are also a large nummer of statues around in the garden.
In the summer I recommend that you enjoy a picnic here.
Its open in the daytime (little longer in the summer) The entrance is free.

Copenhagen documentary film festival has since 2003 been a reoccurring and growing event in international recognition and regular audience attendants. If you are in town during the festival, that are normally held in the end of the year, I will recommend that you visit there webpage and seek out a few film of your interest. The stages for the different film are scattered all over the city. So you might have to make little survey to find the location of the cinema for the film at hand.
I just love the slogan of 2009 That you see on the photo ;-)

Take care little elephant!
The David Collection was started by Christian Ludvig David (1878-1960). He made a private collection of fine and applied art from the 18th century. He also assembled some art works from the Islamic world. After the death of C.L. David the collection has continued to expand, mainly that of Islamic art. The Islamic collection is the largest in Scandinavia and enjoys international standing. And its the Islamic collection you have to see! Its on the top floor 4th. No lift and many stairs in the beautiful old building.
Open daily from 13.00-16.00, Wednesdays from 10-16.00. Mondays closed. Admission free.
From May 1, 2006 the David Collection is closed for rebuilding. In May 2009 the David Collection re-opens with a new renovated and rearranged museum.

Nationalmuseet:The national museum. This museum is a life saver in Copenhagen in bad weather, the admision is free so just get out of the rain. Its collection is huge and even as a inhabitant of the city I have never got to see all of it jet. It is divided into periods in danish history, so the thing to do, is to chose one and look at it. The best period in, my opinion, Stone to Vikingage has just gotten a makeover and have now reopen in 2008. Beside the permanent collections it also have a temporary that can be on any subject, last time I visit it was on Korea.
One of the newest acquisitions is a wonderful decorated hashbooth from Christiania it was saved befor the police ruined Pusher street ....befor one was not abel to take photos of it in Christiania. So now I had the chance ;-)

One of if not the best known Danish companies around the world is Carlsberg. Founded in 1847 by Brewer J.C.Jacobsen growing from the city of Copenhagen and moving to the outskirts of town to Valby hill. You can now visit the old factory that has been turned into a visitors centre. The production of there main brands has been moved out of town but a house label ”Jacobsen” is still being manufactured in the original buildings.
Charitable to sciences culture and arts
Of what I like to name a healthy disagreement between the founder J.C.Jacobsen and his only son C.Jacobsen. The healthiness of the disagreement was that it was the basis for the creation The Carlsberg Foundation By J.C.Jacobsen whom at anytime should have not less then 51% of the share capital. The foundation is managed by a board of directors consisting of 5 members elected by the royal Danish academy of sciences and letters. Among the academy’s members.
One of the objects for the board is that ”Carlsberg” should be know as brew of beer at ”a high and honourable level” and ”a well respected name”. From the income there is donated a good deal of money to sciences, culture and arts beside the normal tax.
After the tour that will cost you 50 DDK or 35 DDK if your are be on 65 years. You will have the pleasure as a part of the entry ticket to sample two glasses of beer one normal and one of the very good Jacobsen beers.

Father of existentialism
At this Copenhagen cemetery there are a lot of famous Danish people berried. Among this there is really tree that stand out in each being world famous for there work that have a huge impact on the world of today. In historical order the poet Hans Christian Andersen 1805-1875. The philosopher Søren Aabye Kierkegaard 1813-1855 and the mathematicians and atom physicist Niels Henrik David Bohr 1885-1962. At the entrees there are maps to the graves of the famous people
Which of them that have had the greatest impact on you life you can wonder about as you enjoy a pick nick here which might seem a bit bizarre to some but a very common phenomenon as the cemetery poses many empty spots between the graves and is one of the few green areas on Nørrebro.
The burial of Søren Kierkegaard was something in it self. As his anti-ecclesiastical viewpoints was the focus of the Danish cultural debate at the time. Thousand of people was taking part in his burial that was taking part in the main cathedral Vor Frue Kirke - Church of Our Lady. Where his brother, who had become a bishop that Søren didn’t want to see at his dead bed, was speaking over his coffin. At the cemetery when he was about to be put into the grave his sister son a doctor Henrik Lund protested that the church had made it a church burial that Søren opposed so much against. And it ended in lawsuit where Lund got a fine for speaking at the graveyard without a ordination.
Søren Aabye Kierkegaard has been ascribed by some as the man who ended Christianity in Denmark.
BTW: Kierkegaard is Danish for Cemetery. The design and words on his grave was chosen by Søren himself.

The New Carlsberg Glyptotek is a must see if you have the time and interest in arts. Its was founded as a private arts collection by brewer Carl Jacobsen and wife Ottilia and donated to the public in 1888-99. And .....yes when you order your Carlsberg around the world some of your money end up here. So with all the beer you drink you can also imagnie how cool the collection of art is here. The buildings was made to house the collection and is something on its own to see.
It has just been rebuild from the inside in the most beautiful way and are now all ready (june 2006) for visitors.
The ancient arts collection is the largest in northern europe and I just love to go to the Egypt part where its made like you are going down a burial chamber. Something els you can if you like meet alot of arts students here as they practise the art of drawing.
Admission 50 kroner, Wednesday and Sunday free.
