Living the dream-A life of travel !!!!

by micropiglet - last update: Feb 11, 2006

Finally escaped form the rat-race!

Me in our flat in KL.
Hi !
I am living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after more than 22 years of travel, and the longing to be travelling whenever I have had to return to the UK. It all began for me back in 1984, when I took my first proper extended trip-a year in India and Nepal. I quit work and got on a plane. It proved to be all that I had hoped it would be, and more, and I was utterly hooked on the unique feeling of being 'someplace else.'
Several other trips to the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka and Thailand followed, again for year long periods. I then plucked up the courage to take off for South America, intending to see much of the Continent, but ended up staying in Brazil for the whole year!
I have always had to return to the UK at some point- I am not a millionaire! Being "out in the world" on a more permanent basis always eluded me. 14 months ago, I quit my career, qualified as an English teacher, and got a job in KL. I have been here, with my wife, for those 14 months now, and find life here wonderful. I always had a worry at the back of my mind that if ever I did get the oppertunity to actually settle in Asia, it would be less amazing than being here as a traveller. This has not been the case, and most days are a blessing, filled with amazing sights, sounds and smells!
I have gone from a hippy traveller, bumming around India, to someone who has found a space for themselves to live and work with his wife in exotic Asia! What a blessing!
