Augusta, Missouri - 1836 was a very good year

Augusta is a small town, about 40 miles west of St. Louis, in the northeast portion of Missouri's wine producing region. It was founded in 1836, as Mount Pleasant, by Leonard Harold, who had been led to the area by Daniel Boone. By the 1850's the town had become known as Augusta. The town has several buildings from its early eras, which are listed on the National Historic Register. The town sits near the Missouri River, with nearby bluffs providing distant views. Augusta is also located along the Katy Trail, a walking and bike trail, which spans over 200 miles across central Missouri. The town has several festivals throughout the year, restaurants, bed & breakfasts & a micro-brewery. The Mount Pleasant Winery is located within the town. There are several wineries nearby as well. A good website for the town is: www.augusta-missouri.com.

Daniel Boone

Daniel Boone, and several members of his family, must have been some of the most restless people to ever walk the face of the earth. Besides having numerous farms, homes and visitations in Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, and Tennessee, Daniel Boone also spent around twenty years of his life in the area around Augusta. The family had numerous homes in this area as well. A map which details these various locations can be found at: www.rootsweb.com/~moboonhs/map.html. There is also a very good listing of important area historical events on this page. One of the Boone family's main homes is located in Defiance, near Augusta. You can visit and tour this home. An informative website is: www.greatrriverroad.com/stcharles/boonehome.html

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Quiet town, except on festival weekends
