The Beautiful City of Graz in Austria

by LauraBBX - last update: Apr 12, 2007

My chosen destination for Spring Break 07

City view from the Schlossberg
So Graz is not exactly a popular spring break spot for US college students...that's one of the reasons I chose to go there for spring break. Another, more important reason was that a good friend of mine lives there now and she's studying at the University there...i figured this would be a great opportunity to see her again and also see this beautiful city!
Beautiful it sure is!! I loved it's arhitecture...it has a wonderful mix of old medieval buildings and modern futuristic-looking structures...
I spent 5 days in Graz and had a wonderful time...
The city is relatively small, i pretty much walked everywhere....although there's plenty of public transportation available, i loved taking the tram!! The coolest feature, i thought, which i think the NY MTA could learn from:), is that at each tram station there's a screen which shows you how long the wait is!! How cool is that?!
The weather was much colder than I expected...I went there expecting spring weather, but since Graz is up in the mountains the weather was pretty cool....needless to say, i brought a lot of clothes (like Tshirts!) which I never got to use and was so cold at one point that I had to buy a sweater to keep me warm... I'm guessing the ideal time to visit Graz is summer, when it's probably not too hot...
The Landhaushof

There's lots to do & see in Graz...

The Landeszeghaus (Armory) was fascinating!! I don't speak German...so one of the problems I've had at some of the museums (for ex the Historical Museum of the city of Graz) was that I couldn't understand what some of the exhibits were about because they were only explained in German...hanging out with a local comes in handy in such situations, because my friend translated for me...however, at the Armory everything was explained in both German and English....The Landeszeughaus is the world's largest historical collection of weaponry/armour. It is located right next to the Landhaushof, which is considered to be a masterpiece of the Italian renaissance...
There's plenty of tourist information points in Graz from where you can get free maps and brochures to all the city attractions...The one we went to was right next to the Landhaushof....
Me in front of the "Friendly Alien"-Kunsthaus Graz

Other things to do in Graz

Another museum I absolutely loved was the Kunsthaus Graz, which is actually located inside the futuristic structure known as the "Friendly Alien"...the alien looks even better at night with all the lights on!! My camera wouldn't take a good picture of it at night, unfortunately...
Also, make sure you visit Schloss Eggenberg...you'll get a guided tour of the castle and it's quite fascinating...
Visiting museums in Graz is quite affordable...all the museums I've mentioned so far (and many others which I didn't get a chance to visit) are part of the "Landesmuseum Joanneum"...you can get a day ticket for 7Euros (for adults) and visit as many museums as you can that day...it's even cheaper for students...i forgot to bring my student id with me, but my friend had hers and ended up paying only 2.50Euros for a day ticket...for a 2day ticket for adults it's 12Euros (still VERY affordable!) You can get the day tickets at any museum that's part of the Landesmuseum Joanneum.

Pros:"beautiful architecture, lots of caffees, some great museums..."
Cons:"a bit pricey I thought, probably not the best destination for a student on a budget:P"
In A Nutshell:"Forget about the beach! Spend Spring break in a place of beauty & culture...just make sure you bring a sweater!!:)"
