"Dessel, Belgium" Dessel by illumina

Dessel Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 11 photos

We wandered into the town of Dessel while at the Graspop Metal Meeting festival in 2005. We'd been to the festival two years before, in 2003, but at that time it was confined to the site, fields on the outskirts of town, and we hadn't left. This year the original site had become the camping area only, while the stages and market were set up on another field just down the road, so there was a fair amount of walking back and forth. We arrived in the middle of a heatwave, and were perpetually dying of thirst; while the locals were doing a brisk trade in selling cold water and beer, we thought we might be able to get something cheaper in town, and as we had a few hours spare between bands we wanted to see, decided to have a look around at the same time. We discovered a very pretty little Belgian town, with an attractive town hall, and pleasantly cool church; there were also a couple of nice cafes (who didn't seem to mind us popping in to use the facilities - the side effect of consuming so much water!) and a park with a particularly well-designed fountain for the occasion - a frame like a doorway with lots of jets coming down - of course it had to be walked through!
