Brittany (Bretagne in French, Breizh in Breton), is the most north-westerly region of France. It was known as Armorica under the Romans, and was settled by Celtic peoples, who formed an alliance of small kingdoms in opposition to the Franks. Bretagne (also known as Lesser or Little Britain, as opposed to Great Britain), became an independant duchy, sometimes allied to England, sometimes to France, but was finally subsumed into the French Kingdom after the marriage of Duchess Anne of Brittany to first Charles VIII, then his successor Louis XII, Kings of France.
The “Association des Petites Cités de Caractère”, founded in 1975, brings together around twenty small, rural settlements all displaying most of the characteristics of a historic town and consequently featuring a first-class urban heritage which reflects their history and once prestigious role. The title is awarded to towns with fewer than 5000 inhabitants with collections of interesting buildings and an effective heritage promotion policy.
I have tried to visit some of these towns - see my Josselin, Moncontour, Quintin, Jugon and Chatelaudren pages for more.
